Role of a mental health physician in the management of oncology patients: a case vignette and the need for collaboration

There is an interplay between oncology and mental health, resulting in a high prevalence of mental disorders among cancer patients. Out of the several interventions developed to target cancer specifics, collaborative care is indicated due to its efficacy. The perspective delves into the efficacy of collaborative care models, spotlighting a culturally informed strategy designed to harmonize mental and physical health interventions to bolster the overall wellbeing and resilience of individuals battling cancer. Central to our discussion is a compelling case vignette of Raliat, a patient diagnosed with ovarian cancer whose narrative exemplifies the multifaceted challenges cancer patients face, including stigma, psychological distress, and social isolation. Raliat's story illuminates the profound impact of cultural beliefs on patient experiences and the critical importance of a sensitive, holistic approach to care that respects cultural contexts. Through this lens, our analysis reveals that addressing emotional and situational stressors through collaborative care can significantly reduce oxidative stress, potentially decelerating the progression of both cancer and accompanying mental health disorders. We advocate for integrating mental health services into oncological care, drawing on the case vignette to argue for policies that facilitate such merger by employing validated collaborative care models. We conclude with a call for public education to diminish cancer stigma and improve social outcomes, emphasizing the use of a culture-informed PACER (physical, affective, cognitive, environmental, and relationship) strategy in providing comprehensive care for cancer patients and their families.

Clinical feasibility of the preoperative CALLY index to predict short- and long-term outcomes of gastric cancer patients

Background & AimsGastric cancer (GC) is a major leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Systemic inflammation and the nutrition-based score are feasible prognostic markers for malignancies. Emerging evidence has also revealed the C-reactive protein –albumin–lymphocyte (CALLY) index to be a prognostic marker for several cancer types. However, its clinical significance to predict surgical and oncological outcomes of GC patients remains unclear. MethodsWe assessed the preoperative CALLY index in 426 GC patients who received gastrectomy. ResultsA low preoperative CALLY index was significantly correlated to all well-established clinicopathological factors for disease development, including an advanced T stage, the presence of venous invasion, lymphatic vessel invasion, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, and an advanced TNM stage. A low preoperative CALLY index was also an independent prognostic factor for overall survival [hazard ratio (HR): 2.64, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.66–4.2; P<0.0001] and disease-free survival (HR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.01–3.05; P=0.045). Additionally, a low preoperative CALLY index was an independent predictive factor for postoperative surgical site infection (odds ratio: 2.64, 95% CI: 1.42–4.89; P=0.002). ConclusionsThe preoperative CALLY index is valuable for perioperative and oncological management of GC patients.

Oncology: What You May Have Missed in 2023.

Advances in oncology treatment methods have improved outcomes and quality of life for patients with cancer. However, care of these patients can be complex, and the contribution of physicians from different specialties is crucial. This article highlights important publications from 2023 on topics across a wide spectrum relating to the management of oncology patients. The literature was screened for significant new evidence that is relevant to internal medicine specialists and subspecialists whose focus is not oncology. Two articles address the importance of social interventions targeting end-of-life care for low-income and minority patients and the well-being of caregivers. Two additional articles address screening considerations in patients at risk for colorectal and lung cancer. Two more articles address safe use of hormone-related therapies to treat symptoms of menopause and prevent disease recurrence or progression in patients diagnosed with noninvasive breast neoplasia. Finally, several articles were included on topics related to COVID-19 vaccination in patients with cancer, use of cannabinoids for cancer pain control, chronic autoimmune adverse effects related to use of immune checkpoint inhibitors, and the incidence of second primary neoplasms.

Impact of COVID-19 on Management and Outcomes of Oncology Patients: Results of MENA COVID-19 and Cancer Registry (MCCR)

ABSTRACT Introduction Despite extensive studies of the impact of COVID-19 on patients with cancer, there is a dearth of information from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Our study aimed to report pertinent MENA COVID-19 and Cancer Registry (MCCR) findings on patient management and outcomes. Methods MCCR was adapted from the American Society of Clinical Oncology COVID-19 Registry to collect data specifically from patients with cancer and SARS-CoV-2 infection from 12 centers in eight countries including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt, Algeria, United Arab Emirates, and Morocco. The Registry included data on patients and disease characteristics, treatment, and patient outcomes. Logistic regression was used to assess associations with mortality. Results Between November 29, 2020, and June 8, 2021, data were captured on 2008 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 from the beginning of the pandemic. Median age was 56 years (16–98), 56.4% were females, and 26% were current or ex-smokers. Breast cancer (28.5%) was the leading diagnosis and 50.5% had metastatic disease. Delays of planned treatment (&amp;gt;14 days) occurred in 80.3% for surgery, 48.8% for radiation therapy, and 32.9% for systemic therapy. Significant reduction in the delays of all three treatment modalities occurred after June 1, 2020. All-cause mortality rates at 30 and 90 days were 17.1% and 23.4%, respectively. All-cause mortality rates at 30 days did not change significantly after June 1, 2020; however, 90-day mortality increased from 33.4% to 42.9% before and after that date (p = 0.015). Multivariable regression analysis showed the following predictors of higher 30- and 90-day mortality: age older than 70 years, having metastatic disease, disease progression, and being off chemotherapy. Conclusion Patients with cancer in the MENA region experienced similar risks and outcome of COVID-19 as reported in other populations. Although there were fewer treatment delays after June 1, 2020, 90-day mortality increased, which may be attributed to other risk factors such as disease progression or new patients who presented with more advanced disease.

Identification and management of mental health distress in Moroccan patients with cancer: Strategies adopted by oncology nurses and barriers to practice.

Adressing mental distress among cancer patients presents a substantial challenge in the delivery of oncology care. This present study aims to explore the nursing strategies for identifying and managing distress in cancer patients as well as the concomitant barriers that prevent them from achieving this task. This qualitative study is based on a semi-structured interview with 25 practicing nurses in oncology. Strategies used by nurses to identify mental distress in their patients include: receiving information, mobilizing interpersonal skills, and identifying causes of distress. When asked about the barriers that hinder the practice of identifying and responding to patients' distress, nurses reported facing several barriers that can be classified into three categories: health care system-related barriers, patient-related barriers, and nurse-related barriers. Oncology nurses should benefit from specific training on the systematic assessment of mental distress in cancer patients, in order to improve the overall management of oncology patients.

Exploring the Role of ChatGPT in Oncology: Providing Information and Support for Cancer Patients

Introduction: Oncological patients face numerous challenges throughout their cancer journey while navigating complex medical information. The advent of AI-based conversational models like ChatGPT (San Francisco, OpenAI) represents an innovation in oncological patient management. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive review of the literature on the use of ChatGPT in providing tailored information and support to patients with various types of cancer, including head and neck, liver, prostate, breast, lung, pancreas, colon, and cervical cancer. Results and Discussion: Our findings indicate that, in most instances, ChatGPT responses were accurate, dependable, and aligned with the expertise of oncology professionals, especially for certain subtypes of cancers like head and neck and prostate cancers. Furthermore, the system demonstrated a remarkable ability to comprehend patients’ emotional responses and offer proactive solutions and advice. Nevertheless, these models have also showed notable limitations and cannot serve as a substitute for the role of a physician under any circumstances. Conclusions: Conversational models like ChatGPT can significantly enhance the overall well-being and empowerment of oncological patients. Both patients and healthcare providers must become well-versed in the advantages and limitations of these emerging technologies.

Assessment of Integrative Therapeutic Methods for Improving the Quality of Life and Functioning in Cancer Patients-A Systematic Review.

Background: Cancer rehabilitation represents a series of measures adopted for the recovery of psychological, emotional, social, and financial functioning in the case of cancer patients. The purpose of this study is to identify the main elements of therapeutic management in the field of medical rehabilitation, as well as integrative, complementary medicine and holistic approaches that can be performed on the oncological patient. Methods: This systematic literature review follows the methodology outlined in the "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis" ("PRISMA") statement, which is an internationally recognized and widely accepted standard. Results: Active rehabilitative therapies offer therapeutic options for improving the functioning and quality of life of oncological patients; these therapies comprehensively address both the physical and psychological aspects of the disease. This review also includes the latest novelties and nanotechnologies applied in oncological rehabilitation, for example, drugs (or supplements) inspired by nature. Conclusions: Physical and rehabilitation medicine, mostly using stimulating therapeutic methods, was recently added to the list of contraindications in the management of oncological patients, both as an approach to the pathological concept itself and as an approach to the main clinical consequences and functional aspects of oncological therapies. Integrative, complementary medicine presents an important therapeutic resource in the case of oncological patients. Advanced studies are needed in the future to further ascertain the role of these therapies.

Bile as a liquid biopsy matrix: potential applications and limitations

Hunting for tumoral material in body fluids, traditionally in blood, the so-called liquid biopsy is set to revolutionize the diagnosis and management of oncological patients. However, other biofluids can also be considered as alternative sources of biomarkers to provide clinically valuable information for multiple diseases. This is the case of bile, a fluid produced in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and excreted to the duodenum, which complex composition is known to change in different pathological conditions. Remarkably, different works have demonstrated that the identification of mutations in bile cell-free DNA (cfDNA) can outperform blood analysis for the early diagnosis of biliopancreatic tumors causing biliary strictures. Here, the literature in which bile has been tested as a liquid biopsy matrix where lipids, metabolites, proteins, and cfDNA among other analytes were measured is reviewed. Moreover, the clinical situations and procedures where bile can be available, discussing the possible applications and limitations of bile analysis are summarized. The scientific relevance and clinical potential of bile harvesting, biobanking, and analysis are put forward. All this evidence supports the value of bile as a liquid biopsy matrix for the management of patients beyond cancer, and perhaps also beyond “blood, sweat, and tears”.

Intraoperative Imaging Techniques in Oncology

Imaging-based procedures have become well integrated into the diagnosis and management of oncological patients and play a significant role in reducing morbidity and mortality rates. Here we describe the established and upcoming surgical oncological imaging techniques and their impact on cancer management.

Implications of oral dysbiosis and HPV infection in head and neck cancer: from molecular and cellular mechanisms to early diagnosis and therapy.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the sixth most common type of cancer, with more than half a million new cases annually. This review focuses on the role of oral dysbiosis and HPV infection in HNCs, presenting the involved taxons, molecular effectors and pathways, as well as the HPV-associated particularities of genetic and epigenetic changes and of the tumor microenvironment occurred in different stages of tumor development. Oral dysbiosis is associated with the evolution of HNCs, through multiple mechanisms such as inflammation, genotoxins release, modulation of the innate and acquired immune response, carcinogens and anticarcinogens production, generation of oxidative stress, induction of mutations. Thus, novel microbiome-derived biomarkers and interventions could significantly contribute to achieving the desideratum of personalized management of oncologic patients, regarding both early diagnosis and treatment. The results reported by different studies are not always congruent regarding the variations in the abundance of different taxons in HNCs. However, there is a consistent reporting of a higher abundance of Gram-negative species such as Fusobacterium, Leptotrichia, Treponema, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella, Bacteroidetes, Haemophilus, Veillonella, Pseudomonas, Enterobacterales, which are probably responsible of chronic inflammation and modulation of tumor microenvironment. Candida albicans is the dominant fungi found in oral carcinoma being also associated with shorter survival rate. Specific microbial signatures (e.g., F. nucleatum, Bacteroidetes and Peptostreptococcus) have been associated with later stages and larger tumor, suggesting their potential to be used as biomarkers for tumor stratification and prognosis. On the other hand, increased abundance of Corynebacterium, Kingella, Abiotrophia is associated with a reduced risk of HNC. Microbiome could also provide biomarkers for differentiating between oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers as well as between HPV-positive and HPV-negative tumors. Ongoing clinical trials aim to validate non-invasive tests for microbiome-derived biomarkers detection in oral and throat cancers, especially within high-risk populations. Oro-pharyngeal dysbiosis could also impact the HNCs therapy and associated side-effects of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. HPV-positive tumors harbor fewer mutations, as well as different DNA methylation pattern and tumor microenvironment. Therefore, elucidation of the molecular mechanisms by which oral microbiota and HPV infection influence the HNC initiation and progression, screening for HPV infection and vaccination against HPV, adopting a good oral hygiene, and preventing oral dysbiosis are important tools for advancing in the battle with this public health global challenge.

Iron Surveillance and Management in Gastro-Intestinal Oncology Patients: A National Physician Survey.

Iron deficiency (ID) is a complication of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers that may manifest as iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Serum ferritin monitoring and oral iron supplementation have the limitations of being falsely elevated and poorly absorbed, respectively. This study aims to assess the discordance in surveillance, treatment practices, and awareness of ID/IDA in GI cancer patients by Canadian physicians treating these patients. From February 2020 to September 2021, a 22-question electronic survey was sent to medical oncologists (MOs), surgical oncologists (SOs), and gastroenterologists (GEs). The survey collected information about four domains: physician demographics, surveillance practices, treatment practices, and awareness of ID/IDA in GI cancer patients and ASCO/ASH guidelines. A total of 108 (34 MOs, 19 SOs, and 55 GEs) of the 872 (12.4%) invited physicians completed the survey. Of these, 26.5% of MOs, 36.8% of SOs, and 70.9% of GEs measured baseline iron parameters, with few continuing surveillance throughout treatment. Ferritin was widely measured by MOs (88.9%), SOs (100%), and GEs (91.4%). Iron was supplemented if ID/IDA was identified pre-treatment by 66.7% of MOs, 85.7% of SOs, and 94.2% of GEs. Parenteral iron was prescribed by SOs (100%), while oral iron was prescribed by MOs (83.3%) and GEs (87.9%). Only 18.6% of physicians were aware of the ASCO/ASH guidelines regarding erythropoiesis-stimulating agents with parenteral iron for treating chemotherapy-induced anemia. Results illustrate variations in practice patterns for IDA management across the different physician specialties. Moreover, there appeared to be gaps in the knowledge and care surrounding evidence-based IDA management principles which may contribute to poor clinical outcomes.

Effects of a high-protein, increased-fibre, dry diet supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids on quality of life in dogs undergoing chemotherapy.

Quality of life (QOL) in dogs with cancer is a key consideration in the assessment of cancer treatment options. Despite interest in dietary strategies to improve management of oncology patients, there have been very few clinical studies showing the impact of diet on adverse effects of chemotherapy in dogs. This study was a randomised, controlled, double-blinded, multicenter clinical trial to investigate a high-protein, increased-fibre diet supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids, for dogs with cancer undergoing standard-of-care chemotherapy. Client-owned dogs with newly diagnosed grade 2 or higher mast cell tumours (or non-resectable/incompletely resected tumours) or multicentric lymphoma were randomised to receive the test diet (n = 24) or control diet (n = 21) for 8 weeks. Primary outcomes were QOL assessments, faecal scores, and blood concentrations of C-reactive protein and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1. Of 12 QOL parameters, 10 significantly improved from baseline to Week 8 in the test group compared with one in the control group. However, differences between the two groups were only statistically significant for 'frequency of signs of illness' (P = .009). There were no significant differences in the incidence of any adverse events, including gastrointestinal adverse events or clinically significant differences in laboratory parameters or faecal scores between the two groups. The absence of an observed negative impact of the test diet, combined with the magnitude of QOL improvements associated with the diet, suggest that a larger trial is warranted.

Analysis of discordant PET and CT findings in 18F-FDG PET-CT scans in the management of oncology patients

This study aimed at determining the significance of these findings in the management of oncology patients. Aim: This study aimed at determining the significance of these findings in the management of oncology patients. Methods: This was an observational, descriptive study. Hence, retrospective analysis of all discordant findings in oncology patients undergoing a PETCT imaging between Jan 2013 and Jan 2016 was done. Those patients who had a follow-up period of minimum 1 year in either of the following forms – repeat PETCT imaging, other radiological imaging, clinical, or histopathological evidence were included. From all the discordant lesions, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive, negative predictive value, and accuracy of both PET-CT and CT modalities were determined. Results: Of 348 discordant lesions, 16.7% was noted in soft tissues, 25% in viscera, 28.7% in lungs, 14.1% in lymph nodes, and 15.5% in bones. At the end of follow-up, 15.2% lesions were PET true positive, 57.5% PET true negative, 10.1% CT true positive lesions, 13.8% CT true negative, and 3.4% were inconclusive. Conclusion: 18F-FDG PET-CT is superior to CT imaging and should be considered as the first-line imaging modality in oncology patients.

Off the Beaten Path in Oncology: Active Brown Adipose Tissue by Virtue of Molecular Imaging.

Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) is considered beneficial in diabetes and obesity, but it can also have negative effects such as its implication in tumours' pathogenesis and the development of Cancer-induced Cachexia. Since 18F-FDG PET/CT is a common molecular imaging modality used in cancer assessment, we aim to study the 18F-FDG BAT biodistribution in oncological patients and look for possible correlations between BAT activity and different malignancies as well as the patient's weight status. After analysing the total number of oncological 18F-FDG PET/CT scans between 2017 and 2021, we selected patients with active BAT. Based on their BMI, the selected patients were divided into nonobese (NO) vs. overweight and obese (OOB). OOB SUVmaxlean body mass(LBM) had the highest mean values in supraclavicular, latero-cervical, and paravertebral vs. mediastinal and latero-thoracic localisations in NO. BMI was positively correlated with latero-cervical and supraclavicular SUVmax(LBM) but negatively correlated with latero-thoracic and abdominal SUVmax(LBM). Considering the age of the patients, SUVmax(LBM) decreases in the latero-cervical, paravertebral, and abdominal regions. In addition, the males presented lower SUVmax(LBM) values. SUVmax(LBM) was not affected by the treatment strategy or the oncological diagnosis. To conclude, it is mandatory to take into consideration the BAT particularities and effects on weight status in order to optimise the clinical management of oncological patients.

Discrepancies between national and local guidelines for the management of paediatric oncology patients with fever and neutropenia (FN): A need for alignment?

BackgroundWe previously demonstrated in a large multicentre point prevalence study (PPS) a marked variability across German and Austrian centres regarding the management of fever and neutropenia (FN) in children, and a high rate of inappropriate treatments compared to recommendations in the German national FN guidelines. MethodsWe analysed local FN standard operating procedures (SOPs) of participating centres and rated their concordance with the German national FN guidelines. To this end, we defined items derived from the German national FN guidelines that we considered essential for any local FN SOP, and assigned points per items. The items comprised “basic requirements of a SOP”; “risk analysis”; “diagnostic approach”; and “use of antibiotics including dosing recommendations”, including sub-categories. ResultsOf the 30 participating centres’ SOPs, 29 were of sufficient granularity for detailed analysis. Only 19/29 (66%) and 20/29 (69%) of the SOPs provided a definition of fever and of neutropenia, respectively. The top scoring sub-categories were “empiric treatment” (mean percentage 69%), “laboratory investigations” (62.4%), and “SOP basics” (59.7%). The worst scoring sub-categories were “definitions” (37.7%), “risk analysis” (32.3%), and “outpatient treatment” (15.7%). ConclusionsThe majority of the local FN SOPs demonstrated a lack of concordance with the German national guidelines on the management of paediatric FN. These discrepancies may explain the high rate of inappropriate antimicrobial treatments in our previous PPS. Our data indicate that local SOPs should be better adapted to national guidelines, and national guidelines should be conceived with the feedback of end-users, thereby anticipating barriers and facilitating acceptance.

Outcomes of Children Discharged Prior to Absolute Neutrophil Count Recovery After Admission for Febrile Neutropenia.

Febrile neutropenia (FN) management in pediatric oncology patients traditionally necessitates inpatient admission until evidence of bone marrow recovery. Discharge before count recovery may be a way to safely reduce the length of hospitalizations for select patients. A chart review was conducted of patients admitted for FN at one tertiary care children's hospital, where the standard is to discharge well-appearing patients after 48 hours of negative cultures if afebrile for at least 24 hours, irrespective of absolute neutrophil count (ANC). Patients with ANC <500 at discharge were identified as early discharges, and data were collected with respect to rates of readmission and infectious complications in this cohort. Among 1230 FN encounters, 765 (62%) were early discharges. 122 patients (15.9%) were readmitted within 7 days. Patients with acute myeloid leukemia and ANC <100 at discharge were more likely to be readmitted. Of the early discharges, only 10 (1.31%) were readmitted with positive blood cultures and 5 (0.7%) were admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit within 24 hours of readmission. Routine discharge before ANC recovery allows for short hospital stays with low rates of readmission, infectious complications, and critical illness for pediatric oncology patients. This safe and beneficial policy should be considered at other institutions.

Using an Adapted Tumor Board Evaluation Tool for Quality Assessment of a Thoracic Multidisciplinary Cancer Conference: A Pilot Study.

Multidisciplinary cancer conferences (MCCs) are crucial for the management of complex oncology patients. Tools to evaluate MCC performance are needed. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the applicability of an existing validated performance assessment tool to evaluate the quality of thoracic MCCs (T-MCCs). Data were collected from weekly T-MCCs over a 5-week period using the MCC Performance Assessment Tool and a self-assessment survey. Audio recordings were used to supplement observation notes. Case presentation, discussion duration, decision making contribution, recommendations, and consensus were captured. Quality of information and contribution were rated on a 1-5 scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to calculate means and composite scores representing overall MCC performance. A total of 44 cases were observed at the T-MCC with the mean presentation and discussion time of 6 minutes and 22 seconds. Quality of case history, radiologic and pathological information, and reason for case discussion were rated above average (>3), whereas inclusion of comorbidities and patient views were rated below average. Surgical oncologists had a higher discussion contribution compared with medical and radiation oncologists (3.6 v 2.9 and 2.4, respectively). The overall mean composite score was 55.9 (deemed average) with no cases categorized as poor or excellent. Radiologists and pathologists had mean preparation times of 81.7 and 144.0 minutes, respectively. This study demonstrated the applicability of a previously validated tool to assess the quality of a T-MCC at an academic comprehensive cancer center. The tool was found to be useful in identifying elements of the T-MCC process that needed improvement.

Experiences in endoscopic ultrasonography at a tertiary center general surgery endoscopy unit

Aim: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is used for diagnosing pathologies in the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs. This study aims to share the experiences and results of EUS and biopsy at a tertiary center general surgery endoscopy unit, in the context of the literature.&#x0D; Methods: Patients who underwent EUS imaging at the general surgery endoscopy unit between January 2021 and January 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic characteristics, EUS biopsy indications, clinical pre-diagnoses, preoperative imaging methods, biopsy counts, and results, as well as complications, were analyzed.&#x0D; Results: The mean age of the 292 patients was 56.5 years, with 53.8% being male. The most common EUS indication was a mass in the pancreas, accounting for 62%. Endoscopic fine-needle aspiration biopsy was performed on 127 (43.4%) patients, and the mean diameter of biopsied masses was 35.1 mm. Malignancy was detected in 58.2% of the biopsied patients. Based on biopsy and lesion characteristics, 49.3% of patients were followed up, 27.4% underwent surgery, 15.4% received oncological treatment, and 7.9% were given endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography.&#x0D; Conclusion: The role of EUS in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies, pancreatic diseases, and biliary diseases continues to evolve. We believe that EUS plays a key role in the multidisciplinary management of complex surgical and oncology patients and those with pancreatobiliary disorders.

Comparative Safety Profiles of Oncology Biosimilars vs. Originators in Europe: An Analysis of the EudraVigilance Database.

In the last decades, the clinical management of oncology patients has been transformed by the introduction of biologics. The high costs associated with the development and production of biologics limit patient access to these therapies. The expiration of exclusive patents for biologics has led to the development and market introduction of biosimilars, offering the reduction of costs for cancer treatments. Biosimilars are highly similar to the reference products in terms of structure, biological activity, efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity. Therefore, the monitoring of biosimilars' safety in real-world clinical practice though pharmacovigilance is essential. This study aimed to analyze the post-marketing pharmacovigilance data of biosimilar monoclonal antibodies used in oncology and compare them with respective reference products. Data of a 2-year period (1 January 2021-31 December 2022) were retrieved from EudraVigilance, and descriptive and comparative analysis were performed using the Reporting Odds Ratio to evaluate the distribution of medicine-reaction pairs related to biosimilars of three antitumor biological products and their corresponding reference products: bevacizumab, rituximab, and trastuzumab. The results showed that most frequently reported ADRs for biosimilars were non-serious and consistent with the safety profiles of reference products. These findings provide reassurance regarding safety equivalence of biosimilars and support their use as valid alternatives to originator biologics.
